Your actual quote may differ based on detailed underwriting, pre-existing conditions, country-specific pricing, currency, and seasonal adjustments. Always get the actual quote from the provider before purchase.

How these estimates work

This calculator uses a transparent formula:

Estimated monthly cost = Base monthly rate × Age multiplier × Region multiplier

Each provider's base rate was sampled from their public quote tool in June 2026 using a 30-year-old US passport holder traveling "worldwide excluding USA" as the baseline. Adjustments are then applied based on your inputs.

Why subscription vs trip insurance matters

Subscription plans (SafetyWing, Genki)

Auto-renewing monthly. No need to know your end date. Cancel anytime. Best for indefinite nomads or trips longer than 3 months. Typically excludes trip cancellation and has stricter adventure sport rules.

Trip insurance (Battleface, World Nomads, IMG, Faye, Heymondo)

Fixed dates set at purchase. Includes trip cancellation by default. Often better adventure sports coverage. Cannot extend mid-trip without buying a new policy. Best for defined-date trips with non-refundable bookings.

Expat health insurance (Cigna Global, Allianz Care)

Annual renewable policies designed for people living abroad long-term. Far higher coverage limits ($2M-$8M typical). Primary coverage rather than secondary. Pricing is 3-5× higher than nomad insurance but appropriate when you have actual healthcare needs in a new home country.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are these estimates?
Estimates use each provider's published base rates with standard age and region adjustments. They are accurate for typical cases within roughly ±15%. Actual quotes can differ based on pre-existing conditions disclosure, specific country pricing variations, currency conversion timing, seasonal adjustments, and policy options you choose. Always verify with a direct quote before purchase.
Why do prices vary so much between providers?
Three main factors: (1) Coverage level — SafetyWing's $250K medical limit vs Cigna's $5M produces 5× difference in baseline; (2) Product positioning — Subscription products (SafetyWing) are priced for volume, trip products (Battleface) are priced per-trip risk, expat products (Cigna) include comprehensive primary care; (3) Underwriter capacity — Some insurers have more competitive reinsurance arrangements.
Should I always choose the cheapest option?
No. The cheapest option is often the one with the lowest coverage limits or most exclusions. For example, SafetyWing Essential is cheap but excludes most adventure sports. Battleface is cheap but has secondary medical coverage. The right question is: "What is the lowest-cost product that covers what I actually need to do?" Use the feature priority chips above to highlight providers that excel where you need them.
What is the difference between primary and secondary medical coverage?
Primary coverage means the insurer pays first. Secondary means you file with your home insurance first, and the travel insurer pays what your home insurance did not cover. For US residents with no overseas coverage, secondary effectively becomes primary in practice. For non-US travelers, secondary can mean longer claim processing.
Why is "Worldwide including USA" so much more expensive?
US medical costs are 3-5× higher than most other countries. A single ER visit averages $2,600 in the US versus $200-500 in Thailand or Mexico. Treatment for a serious incident can easily exceed $100,000. Insurers price US coverage at roughly 1.5× to 2× standard worldwide to account for this. If you do not need US coverage, excluding it saves significantly.
Does this calculator save my data?
Your form selections are saved only in your browser using localStorage so they persist on return visits. Nothing is sent to NomadShield or any server. Quotes are calculated entirely in your browser.
