About NomadShield

Independent insurance research
for people who live on the road

NomadShield exists because nomad insurance is genuinely confusing — and the people who need to understand it most are usually dealing with other things, like being in a foreign country.

What NomadShield is

NomadShield is an independent comparison and editorial site focused entirely on insurance for digital nomads, remote workers, and permanent travelers. We research, compare, and explain insurance products — in plain language, without jargon — so that people can make informed decisions before they need to use their coverage.

We cover SafetyWing, Genki, World Nomads, Heymondo, PassportCard, Cigna Global, and other providers that serve people who live or work outside their home country. Our content spans comparison guides, in-depth reviews, country-specific guides, step-by-step how-to articles, and real claim stories contributed by the nomad community.

Our editorial values

Research-first
Every claim in our articles is checked against official policy documents, provider websites, and community data. We update articles when policies change.
Genuinely honest
We say when a plan isn't worth it. Our claim stories include denials, not just successful payouts. We don't suppress unflattering information about affiliate partners.
Transparent about money
We earn commissions when you buy through our links. This is disclosed on every page. Our editorial recommendations are made independently of our affiliate relationships.

How we research insurance plans

1
We read the policy documents
Not the marketing pages — the actual certificate of coverage documents. Policy language is where the real coverage details live. Marketing copy is for selling; policy documents are for understanding. When there's a discrepancy between what a provider's website says and what the policy document says, we go with the policy document.
2
We track community claims data
Reddit's r/digitalnomad and r/expats communities, Facebook nomad groups, and direct community submissions give us visibility into how claims actually resolve in practice — which often differs from what the policy document implies. When there's a systematic pattern of denial in a particular coverage area, we document it.
3
We verify pricing quarterly
Insurance pricing changes. We verify prices on provider websites at least quarterly and note the verification date on each article. Articles more than six months old that haven't been verified are marked for review. We never publish pricing without noting the date it was checked.
4
We distinguish what we know from what we're inferring
When coverage terms are ambiguous or when we're working from community reports rather than documented policy, we say so. "Based on community reports" and "confirmed in the policy document" mean different things, and we use those distinctions deliberately.

Providers we cover

We currently cover the following providers in our comparison articles, reviews, and guides:

SafetyWing Genki World Nomads Heymondo PassportCard Cigna Global

Coverage of additional providers may be added over time. Provider inclusion is based on relevance to the nomad and long-term traveler demographic, not on commercial relationships.

Our affiliate disclosure policy

How we make money — stated plainly

NomadShield earns commissions when you purchase insurance through links on this site. These commissions come from insurance providers and are paid at no additional cost to you — the price you see is the same whether you use our link or go directly to the provider.

Our affiliate relationships do not determine our editorial recommendations. We publish negative reviews, document claim denials, and recommend alternatives to our affiliate partners when those alternatives are more appropriate for a reader's situation.

Every article that contains affiliate links includes a disclosure statement at the bottom. We do not use affiliate links for providers we have not independently reviewed.

What NomadShield is not

Our content standards

Accuracy
Claims about coverage, pricing, and policy terms are verified against source documents. Where we cannot verify a claim independently, we note this explicitly.
Currency
Each article includes a "Last updated" date. Insurance plans change frequently — we treat outdated information as a significant error and prioritize updating it.
Corrections
If you find an error in our content — incorrect pricing, a changed policy term, or an inaccurate comparison — please contact us. We will investigate and correct errors within 48 hours.
